Job description

Wonderful opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic band 5 Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered Biomedical Scientist to join our friendly and dedicated Blood Sciences team at Charing Cross Hospital working in Clinical Biochemistry and Serology Department. North West London Pathology operates as a hub and spoke model for the provision of pathology services, with Charing Cross Hospital operating as the hub pathology site. The department is a state of the art facility and one of the largest laboratories within the UK.

All major analytical equipment will be state of the art analysers including Abbott Alinity Chemistry and Immuno-Chemistry analysers, Tosoh G11 HbA1c analysers, Abbott HQ Haematology analysers, Stago StarMax2 Haemostasis analysers, Alifax ESR Technology, and BioRad IH1000 Blood Grouping analyser.

The laboratory is covered 24 hours every day and the successful candidate would be expected to participate in core, late and Weekend shift rota which contributes to the continuity and quality of care for patients in the Trust hospitals. Participation in night rota will be expected when there is a service reqirement. Staffs’ are expected to travel across our six hospital sites when required.

Applications are sought from self-motivating individuals who are currently registered with the HCPC. Previous experience in a multi-discipline environment and automated instruments or Abbott Alinity would be an advantage.

  • To be an efficient flexible member of the Clinical Biochemistry and Serology laboratory providing a high quality service to Imperial College Healthcare Trust.
  • Registered BMS - To maintain the required levels of laboratory safety and good laboratory practice, as specified in local and national guidelines.
  • To work with biomedical scientists and clinical scientists in the provision of a comprehensive and effective Clinical Biochemistry and serology service for the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, as directed by the Head of the Department.
  • To participate in the efficient handling, processing and analysis of samples in the laboratory, under supervision.
  • To maintain effective records of all activities and procedures, and to contribute towards the maintenance of the laboratory's quality system.
  • To check, keep clean and maintain laboratory equipment.
  • To carry out supervised laboratory procedures in all sections of the laboratory, as directed by the Head of the Unit and senior scientific staff.
  • To undergo appropriate teaching and training as directed and as necessary in order to maintain HCPC registration and to maintain suitable records of all training activities undertaken.

NWLP Induction

The NWLP induction will run on the first Monday of each month (provided it does not fall on a bank holiday) and includes laboratory training (for relevant laboratory roles). All new staff must attend the NWLP induction during their first week with NWLP.
