Senior Biomedical Scientist - Haematology, NWP

An opportunity exists for a Full Time, HCPC Registered Senior Biomedical Scientist wishing to work within the Haematology and Blood Transfusion departments at Northwick Park and Central Middlesex Hospitals. The post is for a Senior BMS with Haematology and Blood Transfusion experience. Requirements for the post include an MSc degree. Applicants will need a minimum of 5 years experience as a state registered BMS. This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic professional in the North West London area with good travel links into several mainline London stations. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in all shifts to support the 24/7 service as allocated by the Head of Haematology and Blood Transfusion Laboratories. The ideal candidate will contribute to providing a professional and technical laboratory service, working effectively as part of the managerial team in the department. The candidate will be expected to manage daily routine laboratory duties and work independently to maintain an efficient service.

Main duties of the job

The Laboratory services the Haematology and Blood Transfusion pathology needs of a large GP catchment area, with Maternity, Haematology Oncology, and large surgical variety, including St Marks Colorectal surgery. There is also a large company Haemoglobinopathy referral centre involved in Neonatal screening, with varied Blood Film Morphology. The Blood Transfusion laboratory has recently acquired new Grifols analysers on both sites and works alongside the Trust Transfusion Practitioners, Lead BT Clinicians, and the Hospital Transfusion Team to promote Patient Blood Management. Main duties include rotation between Haematology and Blood Transfusion across both sites, covering the 24/7 service, including night shifts. Senior duties include competency training, referral results, clinician queries, maintenance of analysers, checking incompletes, and ensuring proper paperwork completion. Additional responsibilities include incident investigation, audits, change control validations, and preparation for UKAS/MHRA accreditation. The candidate will manage daily department duties, including staff and stock management, analyser function, trending, temperature monitoring, IQC review, and EQA submission. Support on the bench for BMS/AP staff may also be required.

Job responsibilities

Overall Job Purpose:

As a Senior Biomedical Scientist (BMS) in Haematology, you will be responsible for delivering a fit-for-purpose medical laboratory service, analyzing and reporting Clinical Haematology results. The department offers various analytical tests, and the Blood Transfusion department matches, prepares, and supplies blood components.

The post-holder will cooperate with the Chief BMS and Lab Manager in providing Haematology services across Northwick Park NHS Trust and Central Middlesex Hospital on behalf of The Doctors Laboratory.

Main Duties:

  1. Technical/Scientific:
  • Handle, use, and dispose of blood, urine, feces, other tissues, and hazardous chemicals safely.
  • Assist in equipment care and maintenance, ensuring proper functioning before analysis.
  • Carry out troubleshooting, advise the Chief BMS on faults, and work with engineers on fault resolution.
  • Prepare, store, and use reagents for investigations.
  • Perform manual, semi-automated, and automated investigations.
  • Monitor the accuracy and imprecision of investigations using quality controls.
  • Supervise analysis of pathology samples and blood grouping/matching for transfusion.
  • Perform fault finding and corrective actions based on quality control results.
  • Report issues that may cause service failure and communicate operational experiences.
  • Undertake method and instrument evaluations and participate in R&D.
  • Provide scientific advice and act as a resource internally and externally.
  • Result Interpretation and Reporting:
    • Interpret first-line results, authorize results, add comments, refer for specialist opinions, and clinical interpretation.
    • Report results via computer or phone to medical/nursing staff.
    • Inform requestors of significant results.
    • Provide advice and information to healthcare professionals and patients, referring to specialists as needed.
    • Participate in clinical audits.
  • Training and Development:
    • Maintain HCPC registration.
    • Comply with IBMS and HCPC codes of practice.
    • Support staff training and development, including CPD.
    • Assist in maintaining CPA standards.
    • Supervise and monitor staff and trainees.
    • Fulfill competency requirements for out-of-hours duties.
  • Information Technology:
    • Use laboratory systems per protocols.
    • Ensure data protection and confidentiality.
    • Maintain database integrity and accuracy.
  • Administrative:
    • Keep accurate records per CPA standards.
    • Ensure timely reporting of results.
    • Manage resources efficiently, including stock levels.
    • Review policies and risk assessments.
