Job description

A Vacancy at St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Position Overview

This post is based at the Croydon laboratory, where you will complete multidisciplinary training in the Haematology/Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry departments. You will rotate through these departments as required to support the service and may work at any SWLP site as needed.

Laboratory Environment

The Croydon University Hospital Laboratory operates a 24-hour shift system supporting busy A&E and acute services. The Biochemistry Laboratory is equipped with fully automated Beckman equipment (DxI 9000, AU5812, DXA), covering pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic automation. Haematology features ACL Top 570, Beckman Coulter DxH 900 with AutoMate 1200, and Immucor IRIS for automated blood transfusion services. The laboratory processes approximately 1.5 million requests annually with 58 technical staff.

Role Summary

We seek motivated HCPC-registered Biomedical Scientists interested in gaining multidisciplinary experience within clinical blood sciences. The role offers the opportunity to complete the IBMS specialist diploma.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Provide high-quality, professional laboratory services to all users.
  2. Perform core scientific and interpretive work aligned with your qualifications as a Registered Biomedical Scientist.
  3. Participate in rotations across biochemistry, haematology, and blood transfusion departments.
  4. Contribute to a professional clinical laboratory service as an effective team member.
  5. Deliver technical services to patients, including research and audit samples.
  6. Participate in a 24/7 laboratory service, including out-of-hours work.
