Job summary

Randstad CPE is seeking a hands-on R&D Technician to join an advanced powertrain division in Peterborough. You will work on cutting-edge projects including electric motor testing, hybrid powertrain development, and transmission programmes, supporting build, strip, rebuild and testing activities across emerging technologies.

The role requires 2-3 years hands-on post-apprenticeship experience in mechanical/electrical testing or R&D, with a strong diagnostics and fault-finding background.

Qualifications

  • Completed Modern Apprenticeship (Mechanical or Electrical discipline) or an equivalent technical qualification (e.g., BTEC / ONC / HNC).
  • Minimum 2-3 years of post-apprenticeship, hands-on experience in a mechanical/electrical testing, workshop, or R&D environment.
  • Strong background in diagnostics, fault-finding, mechanical fitting, and reading technical drawings/wiring diagrams.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct hands-on mechanical and electrical build, strip, rebuild, diagnostic, and repair activities on prototype power systems.
  • Run test bed software, carry out test plans, and support data logging/analysis under the guidance of lead engineers.
  • Perform electrical safety and insulation checks using diagnostic and service tools.
  • Identify, report, and help resolve technical or product quality issues.
  • Maintain strict adherence to Health & Safety standards, standard work instructions, and safe workshop practices.

Working Hours: 37 hours per week (Day Shift)

Role Overview
