Job summary

Wrightington, Wigan & Leigh NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a site porter to support hospital operations. You will move patients and goods as directed by the Porter Supervisors and Hotel Services Managers, using vehicles and equipment to assist clinical services across wards and departments.

Daily tasks include patient transfers (including deceased), movement of items such as mail and samples, and adherence to departmental policies.

Responsibilities

• Undertakes daily tasks as requested by Porter Supervisor, Wards and Departments.
• Movement of patients including the deceased, by bed chair or trolley.
• Movement of goods, e.g. mail, medical gases, pharmacy items, samples, dirty linen & waste.
• Compliance with Trust and Local procedures; use of equipment and machinery as directed.
• Responds promptly to radio or bleep calls and maintains timely communication with hospital staff and public.
• Assist in safe handling and motion of items and people, including manual handling and use of vehicles.
• Attend mandatory training and help new starters, ensuring compliance with departmental policies.

As a member of the site porter team, you will undertake a wide range of duties as directed by the Porter Supervisors / Hotel Services Managers. You are required to undertake the movement of patients and goods as required. Using vehicles, powered movers and equipment as directed. Support the provision of clinical services to Wards and Departments.

Planning and Organisational Duties

Undertakes daily tasks as requested by Porter Supervisor, Wards and Departments. Movement of patients including the deceased, by bed chair or trolley. Movement of goods, e.g. mail, medical gasses, pharmacy items, samples, dirty linen & waste. Satisfactory performance of duties as laid down in Department Operational Policies, in accordance with approved methods, frequencies and standards. Use of equipment and machinery as directed. Use of electrical/conventional vehicles as directed.

Communications and Key Working Relationships

Adopt a flexible approach when undertaking Porter duties as part of the hospital support team. Use radio/pager communication systems as directed. Prompt response to radio or bleep calls. Routine communication with patients hospital staff and public. Compliance with Trust and Local procedures. Responsibility for Finance May be required to secure buildings. Always keep personal equipment secure e.g. bleeps/radios. Compliance with Trust and Local procedures. Responsibility for Human Resources Demonstrate own duties to new starters. Attend courses as directed, ensure compliance with mandatory training. Compliance with Trust and Local procedures. Complete timesheet or work record. Responsibility for Health & Safety Responsible for ensuring own safety at work. Report any equipment defects to Supervisors. Significant manual handling required, e.g. Patients, trolleys, waste bins, cages. Reports accidents at work and defects with machinery and buildings to the Porter Supervisor. Act as part of the Fire Response/Major Incident response team. Compliance Trust and Local procedures.
