Job summary

Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an organized administrator to support rapid diagnostic pathways for suspected cancer patients. Based at Basildon Hospital, you will coordinate pathways, book investigations, and ensure timely progress across three hospital sites.

You will be the point of contact for patients, handling referrals, and liaising with clinical teams to support a high-quality patient experience. Applicants should have NHS admin experience and strong MS Office skills.

Qualifications

  • GCSE Maths/English Grade C or above, or equivalent.
  • A level NVQ3.
  • Significant previous administrative experience within a healthcare setting
  • Experience of applying hospital administration systems
  • Ability to produce accurate, well presented work on MS Office
  • Understanding of the key challenges facing the Trust

Responsibilities

  • Be a single point of contact for patients throughout their diagnostic journey.
  • Communicate with patients and carers via telephone or in person with empathy and integrity.
  • Coordinate necessary assessments, investigations and appointments.
  • Coordinate transfer of care between service teams and interfaces of care.
  • Refer and signpost to the clinical team as appropriate.

Are you looking for an opportunity to play a key role in improving cancer services and making a real difference to patients' lives? We are seeking an enthusiastic and highly organised individual to join our team in this newly created and exciting role.

This position is central to the implementation of innovative Rapid Diagnostic Pathways for patients with suspected cancer, supporting earlier identification, faster diagnosis and improved patient outcomes. Based at Basildon Hospital, you will help deliver nationally recognised best practice by coordinating integrated cancer pathways across a range of tumour sites.

Working closely with clinical and operational teams, you will manage patient pathways across all three Mid and South Essex hospital sites, ensuring patients progress smoothly through their diagnostic journey. Using a range of digital systems and platforms, both onsite and remotely, you will monitor pathways, coordinate appointments and investigations, and help ensure key targets are achieved.

Main duties of the job

To be a single point of contact for patients throughout their diagnostic journey, alongside access to the right information, support and advice.

Communicate directly through telephone or face to face contact with patients and carers demonstrating empathy, understanding, diplomacy, honesty and integrity.

Co-ordinate the necessary assessments, investigations and appointments required.

Co-ordinate the transfer of care between service teams, or facilitation of service provision across interfaces of care- for example primary and secondary care.

Refer and sign post to the clinical team as appropriate for decisions.

Triage incoming calls from patients and initiate appropriate responses based on clear protocols and frameworks.

Manage referrals into the referral Assessment service (RAS) for RDC including registering referrals on EPR and liaising with the central booking and diagnostic booking teams.
