Job summary

AECOM is seeking an experienced Principal Rail Telecommunications Engineer to lead design, assurance, delivery and support of telecoms across major rail projects in the UK. You will provide technical leadership for FTN/FTNx, fibre optics, IP networking, GSM-R, CCTV, and other telecoms systems, ensuring safe, compliant delivery.

You will mentor engineers, engage with clients and stakeholders, and help shape digital railway programmes while benefiting from a hybrid working model and ongoing

Qualifications

• Significant rail telecoms engineering experience.
• Knowledge of FTN/FTNx, fibre optics, IP networking, GSM-R, CCTV, PA, CIS, and telecoms transmission systems.
• Experience in Network Rail or major rail infrastructure environments.
• Chartered Engineer status or working towards registration desirable.
• Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management.

Responsibilities

• Lead telecoms design and engineering activities across the project lifecycle.
• Provide technical assurance, design review, and engineering governance.
• Support the delivery of telecoms renewals, enhancements, and digital railway programmes.
• Manage technical risks, interfaces, and system integration activities.
• Mentor junior engineers and support professional development.
• Engage with clients, contractors, and key stakeholders.
