Job summary

Avanti West Coast is seeking a Competence Manager to provide guidance, operational expertise and safety leadership across our Customer Experience (CEX) team. You will lead competency assessments, support risk management activities and work with colleagues to promote safe working practices and continuous improvement.

You will also support accident/incident investigations, contribute to safety initiatives and ensure compliance with railway legislation and company procedures.

Qualifications

• Be a competent Train Manager
• Have understanding of Avanti West Coast operational requirements
• Experience using Safety Management Systems
• Knowledge of Railway Group Standards and company standards
• Understanding of relevant railway legislation
• Proven experience in safety management

Responsibilities

• Competence Management: conduct competency assessments and maintain records.
• Safety Assurance: perform risk assessments with the management team and staff reps.
• Trainer Verification: verify Train Manager Peer Trainers per CMS requirements.
• Safety Leadership: deliver frontline safety briefings with safety partners.
• Incident Investigation: support investigations to identify learning and prevent recurrence.
• Contractor Safety: review risk assessments and permits to work for contractors.
• Continuous Improvement: promote a proactive safety culture and identify improvement opportunities.
