Job summary

Avanti West Coast is seeking a Competence Manager to provide professional guidance, operational expertise and safety leadership across our Customer Experience team. The role focuses on maintaining and improving operational competence and safety standards across frontline teams.

You will lead competency assessments, support risk management, and work with colleagues to promote safe working practices and continuous improvement, while helping investigate incidents and ensure compliance with railway

Qualifications

• Proven experience in safety management within a rail or safety-critical environment.
• Ability to identify, assess and mitigate safety risks.
• Experience using Safety Management Systems and CMS.
• Knowledge of Railway Group Standards and Avanti West Coast standards.
• Understanding of relevant railway legislation and compliance requirements.

Responsibilities

• Lead competency assessments in accordance with CMS standards and maintain records.
• Support risk assessments and safety investigations with OBMs and Station Managers.
• Verify Train Manager Peer Trainers in line with CMS requirements.
• Develop frontline safety briefings with Route Safety Business Partners.
• Review risk assessments and method statements for contractors and permits to work.
• Drive continuous improvement in competence, safety performance and working practices.
