Job summary

Arriva plc is seeking a Running Shift Engineer to oversee the safe operation, maintenance, and fault resolution of rolling stock during service hours. You will diagnose, repair, and maintain trains to ensure minimal disruption to passenger services.

The role requires a recognised engineering qualification, experience with railway rolling stock, ability to read engineering drawings, and strong teamwork to coordinate with crews and control rooms. Shifts include nights, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications

• Recognised engineering qualification in Mechanical, Electrical or Railway Engineering.
• Experience in maintenance and fault finding of rolling stock in a railway environment.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and manuals.
• Proficient with diagnostic tools and equipment used in railway maintenance.

Responsibilities

• Conduct proactive and reactive maintenance on rolling stock, including inspections, diagnostics, and repairs of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.
• Respond to in-service failures and breakdowns, identify root causes, and implement effective solutions to restore service.
• Perform routine checks and tests on train systems to ensure safety and operational requirements.
• Document maintenance activities, fault reports, and repair logs accurately.
• Collaborate with train crew, control room staff, and depot personnel to communicate issues and coordinate resolutions.
• Adhere to safety regulations and procedures, and participate in maintenance strategy improvements.
