Job summary

Arriva plc is seeking a Running Shift Engineer at Stamford Hill Garage to oversee safe operation, maintenance and fault resolution of rolling stock during service hours, ensuring minimal disruption to passenger services.

You will conduct proactive and reactive maintenance, diagnose faults, document activities, and collaborate with train crew and control room to coordinate effective resolutions. A recognised engineering qualification and railway experience are required.

Qualifications

• Recognised engineering qualification (e.g., NVQ Level 3, HNC/HND) in Mechanical, Electrical, or Railway Engineering.
• Experience maintaining and fault-finding rolling stock in a railway environment.
• Strong knowledge of train systems: traction, braking, doors, HVAC, control.
• Ability to read engineering drawings, schematics, and manuals.
• Proficient with diagnostic tools for railway maintenance.
• Excellent problem-solving and decision-making under pressure.
• Strong communication and teamwork, liaising with stakeholders.
• Flexible shifts including nights, weekends, and public holidays.
• Valid UK driving license preferred for travel between depots.

Responsibilities

• Conduct proactive and reactive maintenance on rolling stock during service hours.
• Respond to in-service failures, identify root causes, restore service or support recovery.
• Perform routine checks and tests on train systems to meet safety standards.
• Document maintenance activities and fault reports accurately.
• Collaborate with train crew, control room, and depot staff to coordinate resolutions.
• Adhere to safety regulations and industry standards.
• Participate in continuous improvement and maintenance strategies.
• Operate diagnostic equipment to identify faults.
• Carry out minor infrastructure repairs or assessments as required.
• Provide technical guidance to team members.
