Job summary

Heavy Haul Rail in the United Kingdom seeks a skilled roster and workforce planner to support efficient freight delivery. You will manage driver and ground staff rosters, ensuring compliance with UK Rail standards and fatigue guidance for a network moving 17m tonnes annually.

Responsibilities include producing base and weekly rosters, handling alteration sheets, maintaining competency data, and coordinating with Control to ensure train coverage.

Qualifications

• Solid general education and experience in workforce planning or similar roles.
• Good knowledge of freight train operations and railway geography.
• Excellent organisational and self-motivation skills.
• Strong communication abilities.
• Computer literacy including Windows applications, ORS and railway systems.
• Knowledge of drivers’ and ground staff conditions of service.

Responsibilities

• Produce efficient base and weekly rosters for all commodities.
• Issue weekly rosters and prepare daily alteration sheets for depots.
• Ensure rostering meets UK Rail principles, fatigue guidance, and company standards.
• Maintain competency data and ensure only competent staff are rostered.
• Manage drivers’ annualised hours, contracts, annual leave rosters, and ground staff rosters.
• Implement diagram alterations on the working timetable and update rosters accordingly.
• Use rostering and competence tools and industry systems to manage roster delivery.
• Arrange hotel bookings, medicals, hire vehicles, and cross‑cover as required.
• Reconcile rostering changes with appropriate systems and correct recorded hours.
• Assist Control and other departments to ensure train coverage per plan.
• Provide rostering cover as needed and undertake additional duties commensurate with the role.
