About us

At National Gas, the work we do matters.

As Britain's national gas network, we help keep the lights on, businesses running, and homes warm by maintaining the critical infrastructure that transports gas across Great Britain. While providing the energy security Britain relies on today, we're also helping transform the network for a clean energy future.

Join us and help secure Britain's energy.

About the role

As a Quantity Surveyor, you'll provide commercial leadership across a portfolio of infrastructure projects that help keep Britain's gas transmission network operating safely and reliably. Working closely with Project Managers and delivery teams, you'll influence key decisions, manage commercial risk, and help deliver projects that support critical national infrastructure.

This role sits within our East Region, a strategically important part of the network that includes Bacton Gas Terminal, seven compressor stations, and a wide range of operational and investment activities across the region.

Why this role matters

Delivering and maintaining energy infrastructure requires strong commercial management as well as technical expertise. Every project must balance cost, risk, quality, and delivery to ensure customers receive value while maintaining the resilience of the network.

As a Quantity Surveyor, you'll help shape project outcomes from planning through to completion. Whether supporting major asset investments, managing contractual risks, or driving efficiencies, your work will directly influence the successful delivery of infrastructure that millions of people rely on every day.

What you'll be doing
  • Provide commercial and contractual support across a portfolio of infrastructure projects
  • Manage NEC contracts and help project teams apply contractual arrangements effectively
  • Monitor costs, forecasts, and commercial performance to support informed decision-making
  • Support tender evaluations, negotiations, and contract awards
  • Manage compensation events, variations, and commercial risks as projects evolve
  • Work with project teams to identify efficiencies and improve value throughout the project lifecycle
  • Support and mentor other Quantity Surveyors and Junior Quantity Surveyors within the team
What you'll bring

This role would suit someone who enjoys influencing project outcomes, solving commercial challenges, and working closely with project teams to deliver complex infrastructure safely and efficiently.

  • Experience working as a Quantity Surveyor within construction, infrastructure, utilities, or other major project environments
  • Strong knowledge of NEC contracts, ideally NEC3 and NEC4, including Options A, C, and E
  • Experience managing project costs, forecasts, commercial records, and contractual risk
  • Ability to support tender evaluations, negotiations, and commercial decision-making
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to build effective relationships across project teams and contractors
  • Experience identifying and managing commercial risks and opportunities
  • Ability to provide commercial leadership and positively influence stakeholders
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Experience within utilities, energy, or other regulated infrastructure environments
  • Knowledge of NEC Two Stage ECI
  • Experience supporting or mentoring Quantity Surveyors and Junior Quantity Surveyors
  • RICS or CICES Chartered status, or working towards chartership
  • Degree or equivalent qualification in Quantity Surveying or a related discipline
