Job summary

National Gas Transmission plc in the West region seeks a Junior Quantity Surveyor to support commercial management of infrastructure projects, monitor costs, and assist with risk and supplier performance.

You’ll work with project managers and commercial teams, focusing on contract administration, payment processes, and tender evaluations within a hybrid working pattern.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Quantity Surveying or equivalent qualification; working towards degree welcomed.
  • Knowledge of NEC3 and NEC4 contracts including Options A, C, and E.
  • Strong communication, influencing, and negotiation skills.
  • Commercial awareness and understanding of supply chain management.
  • Proficiency in MS Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; driving licence required.
  • Utilities sector experience and AssocRICS membership are advantages.
  • Experience supporting contract management activities and cost control.
  • Understanding of project management, scheduling, and cost control principles.
  • Experience supporting tender evaluations and commercial reviews.

About the role

As a Junior Quantity Surveyor, you'll help ensure infrastructure and operational projects deliver value, remain commercially robust, and achieve the outcomes our region depends on. Working closely with project managers and commercial colleagues, you'll support contract management, cost control, risk management, and supplier performance across a diverse portfolio of work.

What you’ll be doing
  • Supporting the commercial and contractual management of infrastructure projects
  • Managing commercial activities on allocated contracts while contributing across a wider portfolio
  • Monitoring project expenditure, validating payment applications, and preparing payment certificates
  • Supporting risk management activities and maintaining project risk registers alongside project managers
  • Producing commercial reports, meeting records, and supporting project documentation
  • Assisting with tender evaluations, supplier engagement, and contract negotiations
  • Supporting dispute resolution activities through the collation and review of commercial information
What you’ll bring

This role would suit someone who enjoys combining commercial thinking with project delivery and is looking to develop a long‑term career in infrastructure and construction.

  • Degree (or equivalent qualification) in Quantity Surveying, or currently working towards a Quantity Surveying degree or equivalent professional qualification
  • Knowledge of NEC3 and NEC4 contracts, including Options A, C, and E
  • Strong communication, influencing, and negotiation skills
  • Commercial awareness and understanding of supply chain management
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Utilities sector experience
  • Associate membership of RICS (AssocRICS)
  • Experience supporting contract management activities
  • Understanding of project management, scheduling, and cost control principles
  • Experience supporting tender evaluations and commercial reviews
