Job summary

Ian Williams Ltd in Kent is seeking a driven Quantity Surveyor to join our growing South East team. Based in Tonbridge, you will tenders, estimates and measures on site, supporting contracts across housing, commercial, education, and retirement living sectors.

You will build client and supplier relationships, identify risks and opportunities, and work with the Contracts Manager to ensure productive targets and commercially viable outcomes.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in a similar estimating and commercially focused surveying role.
  • Experience of commercial ownership of projects and contracts from tender and estimation through to final account.
  • Experience of working for a painting or refurbishment contractor is advantageous.
  • Experience managing works with total value up to £2 million annually.

Responsibilities

  • Measure and prepare cost estimates for contracts and tenders, flagging commercial risks.
  • Prepare cost value reconciliations for contracts to ensure correct planning.
  • Collaborate with Contracts Manager to align labour targets and incentives before start.
  • Build strong client, supplier and subcontractor relationships for viable variations.
  • Analyse weekly site reports with cost information including budgets and progress.

Following an internal promotion, our flourishing South London cyclical painting team is looking for a Quantity Surveyor based in Kent.

A driven, people-focused and entrepreneurial Quantity Surveyor, you'll join the dedicated commercial and operational team, which specialises in painting, decorating and associated planned refurbishment works in the South London and Kent areas. You'll be working for clients across a variety of sectors including commercial property development, education and social housing.

The Quantity Surveyor Role

As a Quantity Surveyor you will either be based in our Tonbridge Unit, you will actively tender, estimate and measure onsite. We can offer a variety of works including established frameworks and core contracts with prestigious housing clients within the public, and residential sector as well as our property services covering retirement living, commercial and education sectors too.

Specifically, you will:

  • Measure and prepare cost estimates for contracts and tenders, highlighting any commercial risks and mitigation for these.
  • Prepare cost value reconciliations for contracts, identifying commercial risks and opportunities to ensure correct contract planning from the outset.
  • Work closely with the Contracts Manager to ensure productivity labour targets are agreed and issued before contract start, including direct labour incentives where possible.
  • Build strong client, supplier, and subcontractor relations, to ensure any variations and progress of contracts are discussed and mutual, commercially viable solutions are sought, always.
  • Complete and analyse weekly reporting from site, ensuring it has adequate cost information (including labour rates and performance expectations, budgets, value, progress, quality, and safety).
What will you bring as Quantity Surveyor?
  • You will be inquisitive, organised, and honest as well as being a genuine ‘people person’ who thrives when collaborating with clients, trade teams and immediate colleagues. You will enjoy being part of a genuine team environment.
  • Proven experience in a similar estimating and commercially focused surveying role. Experience of the commercial ownership of projects and contracts from tender and estimation stages through to final account. Experience of working for a painting or refurbishment contractor would be very advantageous.
  • Experience of successfully managing commercially, a total value of works up to £2 million annually.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit, with a key eye for identifying business opportunities, and areas for negotiation and better gains. You will describe yourself as commercial, analytical, and accurate in your approach.
