Job summary

Ian Williams Ltd in Birmingham seeks a driven Quantity Surveyor to join our painting and decorating focused team. You will tender, estimate and measure on site, supporting frameworks and contracts with housing clients in public and residential sectors.

You will build client and supplier relationships, manage cost reporting and ensure commercial viability of variations while contributing to a secure, long-term business future.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in a similar surveying role and ownership of projects from tender to final account.
  • Experience with painting or refurbishment contracts is advantageous.
  • Strong commercial, analytical and negotiation capabilities.
  • Ability to collaborate with clients, trade teams and colleagues.

Responsibilities

  • Measure and prepare cost estimates for contracts and tenders, highlighting commercial risks and mitigation.
  • Prepare cost value reconciliations for contracts, identifying risks and opportunities for planning.
  • Work with the Contracts Manager to agree productivity labour targets and incentives.
  • Build strong client, supplier and subcontractor relations for viable variations.
  • Analyse weekly site reports with cost information including labour rates, budgets and progress.

The Quantity Surveyor Role

As a Quantity Surveyor in Birmingham you will actively tender, estimate and measure onsite. We can offer a variety of works including established frameworks and core contracts with prestigious housing clients within the public and residential sectors as well as our property services covering defence, commercial and education sectors.

  • Measure and prepare cost estimates for contracts and tenders, highlighting any commercial risks and mitigation.
  • Prepare cost value reconciliations for contracts, identifying commercial risks and opportunities to ensure correct contract planning from the outset.
  • Work closely with the Contracts Manager to ensure productivity labour targets are agreed and issued before contract start, including direct labour incentives where possible.
  • Build strong client, supplier and subcontractor relations to ensure variations and progress of contracts are discussed and mutually commercially viable solutions are sought, always.
  • Complete and analyse weekly reporting from site, ensuring it has adequate cost information (including labour rates and performance expectations, budgets, value, progress, quality and safety).
Qualifications
  • Inquisitive, organised, honest and a genuine people person who thrives when collaborating with clients, trade teams and colleagues.
  • Proven experience in a similar surveying role. Experience of owning projects and contracts from tender and estimation through to final account. Experience with a painting or refurbishment contractor is advantageous.
  • Experience successfully managing commercially a total value of works up to £2 million annually.
  • Experience with Schedule of Rates (SORs).
  • Entrepreneurial spirit, keen eye for identifying business opportunities and negotiation to gain better outcomes. Commercial, analytical and accurate approach.
