Job summary

National Vehicle Distribution seeks a Senior QHSE Officer to lead safety, quality and environmental culture across our logistics and processing sites on a 12-month fixed-term contract with potential to convert to permanent. You will own sections of the integrated management system and mentor safety reps.

Reporting to the H&S Manager, you will plan audits, lead investigations, manage KPI reporting, and drive continuous improvement while ensuring compliance with ISO 45001, 9001 and 14001 across UK

Qualifications

• NEBOSH diploma or equivalent required.
• Experience leading audits and investigations.
• Strong knowledge of ISO 9001, 14001, 45001.
• Full, clean driving licence for travel between sites.

Responsibilities

• System ownership: maintain and improve the integrated management system and lead on external certification audits.
• Inspections & auditing: plan and lead site safety inspections and internal audits, and escalate systemic issues.
• Incident investigation: lead root-cause analysis and close out corrective actions.
• Data & reporting: own KPI reporting and monthly/quarterly safety, quality and environmental reports.
• Training coordination & mentoring: deliver toolbox talks and safety inductions; mentor safety reps.
• Continuous improvement: identify practical initiatives to improve operations without compromising safety, quality or environmental standards.

Role Summary

The Senior QHSE Officer is a senior tactical role, offered on a 1-year fixed-term contract with the potential to move to a permanent role thereafter, working closely with the H&S Manager to lead and mature the safety, quality and environmental culture across our logistics and processing sites. You will take ownership of key elements of our integrated management system, lead audits and investigations rather than assist with them, and act as a deputy point of contact when the H&S Manager is unavailable. You'll also mentor and provide technical guidance to safety reps, helping build out the wider team as NVD expands.

Key Responsibilities

• System Ownership: Take a leading role in maintaining and continually improving our integrated management system, ensuring ongoing compliance with ISO 45001, 9001 and 14001. Own specific sections of the system and lead on preparing for external certification audits.




• Inspections & Auditing: Plan and lead site safety inspections and internal audits, including scheduling the audit programme. Review findings from safety reps, sign off corrective actions, and upscale systemic issues to the H&S Manager with recommended solutions rather than raw findings.




• Incident Investigation: Lead incident and near-miss investigations end to end, from root-cause analysis through to closing out corrective and preventive actions. Identify trends across sites and present "lessons learned" findings to management and the wider team.




• Data & Reporting:Own the H&S/QHSE database and KPI reporting. Prepare and present monthly and quarterly reports on safety, quality and environmental performance to senior management, with clear recommendations for improvement.




• Training Coordination & Mentoring: Design and deliver toolbox talks, safety inductions and refresher training for staff and contractors. Identify certification gaps across the business and coordinate training plans. Provide day-to-day technical guidance and mentoring to safety reps.




• Continuous Improvement: Proactively identify and lead practical initiatives that increase operational efficiency without compromising safety, quality or environmental standards, in line with NVD's commitment to innovation and technology.

Qualifications & Experience

• Education: NEBOSH diploma or similar.


• Certification: NEBOSH/IOSH Diploma (or working towards, with the General Certificate already held) is required.


• Experience: Significant post-graduate experience in a Health & Safety or QHSE role, with demonstrated experience leading audits and investigations, preferably within logistics, automotive or heavy industry.


• Standards: Strong working knowledge of ISO management systems (9001, 14001, 45001), including audit experience against these standards.


• Skills: Strong communication and influencing skills across all levels of the organisation, including senior management. Proven ability to mentor safety reps. Proficient in data management, KPI reporting and report writing.


• License: A full, clean driving licence is essential for travel between NVD sites.
