Job summary

Barnsley Council is seeking an experienced Mechanical Building Services Engineer to support the delivery of safe, compliant and sustainable buildings across our diverse property portfolio.

You will design, specify, inspect and manage mechanical and electrical building services for corporate, civic, commercial and community assets, including new builds and refurbishments, working with internal teams, consultants and contractors.

Qualifications

• Qualified Mechanical or Electrical Engineer with appropriate professional recognition.
• Experience working on building services systems in complex buildings.
• Knowledge of relevant legislation and standards (BS, HTM, CIBSE).
• Experience collaborating with consultants and contractors.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.
• Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.

Responsibilities

• Provide professional mechanical and/or electrical engineering advice across Council assets and capital projects.
• Lead and contribute to the design, specification and review of building services systems (mechanical).
• Ensure statutory compliance (gas, electrical safety, legionella, ventilation, BMS).
• Manage surveys, condition assessments and feasibility studies.
• Support procurement and contract management, including monitoring contractor performance.
• Oversee site inspections, commissioning and handover of building services installations.
• Contribute to sustainability, energy efficiency and decarbonisation initiatives.
• Prepare technical reports, specifications and briefing documents.
