Job summary

Barnsley Council is seeking an experienced Mechanical Building Services Engineer to join our Property & Construction teams, supporting safe, compliant and sustainable buildings across the Council’s portfolio.

You will design, specify, inspect and manage mechanical and electrical building services for a diverse range of assets, including new builds, refurbishments and lifecycle projects, collaborating with consultants, contractors and service users.

Qualifications

• Qualified Building Services engineer with capability to work across complex assets.
• Experience on building services within complex buildings.
• Knowledge of BS, HTM, CIBSE guidance and related standards.
• Experience collaborating with consultants and contractors.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.
• Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.

Responsibilities

• Provide professional mechanical and/or electrical engineering advice across assets and capital projects.
• Lead and contribute to the design, specification and review of building services systems (mechanical).
• Ensure statutory compliance across gas, electrical safety, legionella, ventilation and BMS.
• Manage surveys, condition assessments and feasibility studies.
• Support procurement and contract management, including monitoring contractor performance.
• Oversee site inspections, commissioning and handover of building services installations.
• Contribute to sustainability, energy efficiency and decarbonisation initiatives.
• Prepare technical reports, specifications and briefing documents.
