Job summary

Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council is seeking an experienced Mechanical Building Services Engineer to join our Property & Construction teams, delivering safe, compliant and sustainable building services across a diverse asset portfolio.

You will design, specify, inspect and manage mechanical/electrical services for new builds, refurbishments and lifecycle works, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to ensure high-quality outcomes.

Qualifications

• Qualified in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience.
• Experience delivering building services in complex buildings.
• Knowledge of BS, HTM and CIBSE guidance.

Responsibilities

• Provide professional mechanical and/or electrical engineering advice across Council assets and capital projects.
• Lead and contribute to design, specification and review of building services systems (mechanical).
• Ensure statutory compliance (gas, electrical safety, legionella, ventilation, BMS).
• Manage surveys, condition assessments and feasibility studies.
• Support procurement and contract management, including monitoring contractor performance.
• Oversee site inspections, commissioning and handover of building services installations.
• Contribute to sustainability, energy efficiency and decarbonisation initiatives.
• Prepare technical reports, specifications and briefing documents.
