Job summary

IBM Consulting UK FutureNow is seeking a Senior Application Architect to shape, design and deliver modern, scalable and secure solutions across complex, mission-critical services. You’ll translate business needs into architectures, collaborate with stakeholders and engineering teams to drive cloud-native initiatives on AWS.

You’ll mentor engineers, contribute to architectural governance, and lead modernization efforts while delivering robust architecture artefacts and roadmaps.

Qualifications

• Experience designing enterprise-scale applications and distributed systems.
• Strong background in Java and modern application development frameworks.
• Experience designing microservices-based architectures and RESTful APIs.
• Experience working within cloud environments, ideally AWS.
• Strong understanding of software architecture patterns, design principles and engineering best practices.
• Experience modernising legacy applications and supporting cloud adoption initiatives.

Responsibilities

• Design scalable, secure and resilient architectures aligned to business needs.
• Lead architecture patterns for web apps, APIs, integrations and cloud-native services.
• Drive application modernisation and migration of legacy systems.
• Produce and maintain High-Level Designs (HLDs) and technical records.
• Collaborate with engineering teams to implement architecture principles.
• Define integration approaches across data platforms, APIs and third-party services.
• Guide cloud alignment with AWS and modern cloud environments.
• Promote best practices in security, performance and observability.
• Support architecture governance with design reviews and assurance activities.
• Mentor engineers and junior architects; contribute to recruitment.
