Job summary

Nottingham City Council is seeking a Public Realm Operative within Grounds Maintenance to support the upkeep and improvement of outdoor spaces across Nottingham. The role involves hands-on tasks such as grass cutting, hedge cutting, pruning, weeding, litter picking and leaf clearance in parks, housing estates, and public spaces.

You will operate hand tools and machinery, adhering to safety practices to keep areas clean and welcoming for residents and visitors.

Qualifications

• Essential qualifications: A current and appropriate driving licence, where required for the role, and a willingness to complete any relevant training or qualifications.
• Essential experience: Practical outdoor work such as grounds maintenance, gardening, grass cutting, hedge cutting, cleansing, estate maintenance, refuse/recycling, landscaping or similar frontline environmental services.
• Essential knowledge: Understanding of health and safety requirements, safe working practices, manual handling, road safety where applicable, and safe use of tools, equipment and machinery.
• Essential skills and competencies: Reliable, flexible and practical approach; able to work outdoors in all weather; able to carry out physically demanding tasks; good teamwork and communication; able to follow instructions with minimal supervision; commitment to customer care, equality and diversity, and maintaining clean, safe public spaces.

Responsibilities

• Support upkeep and improvement of outdoor spaces across Nottingham.
• Carry out grass cutting, strimming, hedge cutting, pruning, weeding, litter picking, leaf clearance and general maintenance of communal areas.
• Use hand tools, powered equipment and grounds maintenance machinery, following safe working practices.
• Help ensure local areas are clean, safe, tidy and welcoming for residents, visitors and communities.
