Job summary

Derby City Council is recruiting a Public Health Intelligence Analyst to turn health and wider determinants data into actionable insight that informs strategies, commissioning and service improvement.

You’ll lead the public health intelligence function, analyse complex datasets, present findings in reports and dashboards, and advise colleagues across the Council, NHS and partners to reduce health inequalities.

Qualifications

• Degree and/or postgraduate qualification in a quantitative or health-related field.
• Strong statistical analysis skills and experience with large, complex datasets.
• Experience using statistical software with databases and spreadsheets to manage data.
• Ability to communicate complex findings clearly to diverse audiences.
• Strong planning and organisational skills to manage priorities and deadlines.
• Collaborative approach across disciplines and organisations.

Derby Public Health Department is a forward-looking team with ambitions to improve the health and wellbeing of our city’s population and reduce health inequalities through working collaboratively with local people, communities and partners.

The post of Public Health Intelligence Analyst will be central to the delivery of these ambitions by turning health, care and wider determinants data and insight into clear, actionable intelligence that informs strategies, policies, commissioning and service improvement.

Working closely with colleagues across the Council, the NHS, UKHSA and other partners the Public Health Intelligence Analyst will help us understand population needs, monitor inequalities, support health protection, and provide insight that drives real change.

The Opportunity

In the role of Public Health Intelligence Analyst, here’s an example of what you’ll be doing to make an impact: You will be supporting the Public Health Department and wider Council to improve and protect the health and wellbeing of the population of Derby and reduce health inequalities by Leading our public health intelligence function to:

• Analyse and interpret complex health and care data to provide clear, actionable public health intelligence.
• Identify and explain patterns, trends and inequalities in health outcomes and service use.
• Develop, maintain and document public health datasets, databases and analytical tools.
• Plan and deliver multiple information projects, ensuring high standards of data quality, timeliness and accuracy.
• Present complex information in accessible formats (reports, dashboards, presentations) for specialist and non-specialist audiences.
• Provide analytical advice, training and support to colleagues, helping to build analytical capability across the system.
• Contribute to needs assessments, evaluations, audits, surveys and research to inform policy and service development.
• Ensure data is handled in line with information governance, data protection and confidentiality requirements.
• Work with local and regional partners and intelligence networks to share learning and improve the effectiveness of public health information and intelligence.

You will be a key member of the Public Health team, working alongside Public Health colleagues and partners across the Council and wider health and care system.

About You

To be successful in this role, you’ll ideally have...

• A relevant degree and/or postgraduate qualification (or equivalent experience) in a quantitative or health-related discipline (e.g. statistics, epidemiology, public health, data science).
• Strong skills in statistical analysis and experience of working with large, complex datasets.
• Experience of using statistical software and tools, alongside databases and spreadsheets, to manage and analyse data.
• The ability to communicate complex analytical findings clearly and effectively to a range of audiences.
• Strong planning and organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and deliver to deadlines.
• A collaborative approach, with the ability to work effectively with colleagues from different disciplines and organisations.
• A commitment to improving population health and reducing health inequalities.
