Job summary

Hays is recruiting for a Quantity Surveyor in Inverness on a major construction project. The role offers a clear path from Assistant QS to autonomous Project QS, with responsibility for your own packages and exposure to procurement, valuations, and commercial decision-making.

The successful candidate will have a degree in Quantity Surveying and construction industry experience, with a strong numerical ability and a desire to develop commercially.

Qualifications

• Experience with a main contractor or similar construction environment.
• Experience with subcontract procurement and commercial administration.
• Strong measurement and numerical skills.
• Willingness to take ownership of packages.

Responsibilities

• Manage costs and income across assigned work packages.
• Procurement of subcontractors, including enquiries, comparisons and recommendations.
• Manage subcontractor accounts through to final account.
• Prepare valuations, cost reports and cost reconciliations.
• Measurement and interpretation of drawings and specifications.
• Identify and manage variations.
• Support commercial forecasting and project reporting.
• Collaborate with site, design and supply chain teams.
• Develop contractual and commercial knowledge.

This opportunity would particularly suit an Assistant Quantity Surveyor who feels ready to step up, take greater ownership of their own packages and progress towards becoming a fully autonomous Project QS. Your new role Working alongside an experienced commercial and project team, you will take responsibility for your own packages on a significant live construction project.You'll move beyond the traditional Assistant QS remit, gaining greater exposure to procurement, subcontractor management, valuations, cost reporting and commercial decision-making.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Managing costs and income across allocated work packages
• Procurement of subcontractors, including enquiries, comparisons and recommendations
• Managing subcontractor accounts through to final account
• Preparing valuations, cost reports and cost reconciliations
• Measurement and interpretation of drawings and specifications
• Identifying and managing variations
• Supporting commercial forecasting and project reporting
• Working closely with site, design and supply chain teams
• Developing your contractual and commercial knowledge

You'll have the support of an experienced commercial team while being encouraged to take increasing ownership and responsibility as your experience develops.

This is an opportunity for someone with a solid foundation at Assistant QS level who is ready to take the next step.

What you'll need to succeed

You will ideally be an Assistant Quantity Surveyor or recently promoted Quantity Surveyor with construction industry experience.

You’ll ideally have:

• A degree in Quantity Surveying or related commercial discipline
• Experience within a main contractor, specialist contractor or similar construction environment
• Exposure to subcontract procurement and commercial administration
• Good measurement and numerical skills
• A desire to take ownership of your own packages
• Ambition to develop into a well-rounded Quantity Surveyor
• Crucially, you don't need to be the finished article.
