Job description

About you

If you are an experienced Fire & Security professional who has reached the point where you want more ownership, this is a role worth having a conversation about.

You will already understand the Fire Alarm and Security industry and be comfortable managing projects from the early design and estimating stages through to installation, commissioning and handover.

What makes this role different is that you are not walking into an established department and simply taking over a list of projects. The business is bringing its Fire & Security capability in house, so you will have a genuine opportunity to help build it.

You will need to be technically strong, commercially aware and confident dealing with clients, consultants, contractors, manufacturers and suppliers. Just as importantly, you will need to be someone who enjoys taking ownership and making things happen.

Your experience

You will need proven experience within the Fire Alarm or Fire & Security industry, alongside strong project management skills.

Your experience is likely to include Fire Alarm system design or design management, estimates and quotations, procurement, supplier management and managing projects through to commissioning and handover.

A strong understanding of relevant British Standards and industry requirements will be important, particularly BS 5839. Knowledge of BS 7671, security systems standards and industry accreditation schemes such as BAFE would also be highly beneficial.

Experience with systems and manufacturers such as Advanced, Kentec, Notifier, Morley, C TEC, Hochiki, Apollo or Gent would be useful, as would experience across access control, CCTV and intruder alarms.

You will also need good commercial awareness, with an understanding of project costs and margins, as well as the ability to manage client expectations and build strong relationships.

What you will be doing with your experience

This is where the role gets particularly interesting.

You will work closely with senior management to establish and develop the company's new in house Fire & Security operation. That means getting involved in much more than project delivery.

You will help identify and obtain the relevant industry accreditations, develop the processes and procedures needed to operate the division properly and help establish the technical capability required to deliver compliant, professional Fire & Security projects.

Alongside this, you will manage projects from initial enquiry through to completion, including design, estimating, programming, procurement, labour and subcontractor coordination, installation, testing, commissioning and handover.

You will oversee project costs and programmes, maintain the necessary drawings, specifications, certificates and handover information, and make sure projects meet the required legislation, standards and client specifications.

You will also help develop relationships with manufacturers, suppliers, consultants and clients, while identifying opportunities to grow the Fire & Security offering.

Ultimately, you will be helping create a sustainable and commercially successful Fire & Security department, with the opportunity to take on increasing responsibility as it develops.

About the business

You will be joining a growing business with an established operation and ambitious plans for its Fire & Security offering.

Historically, Fire & Security works have been delivered through subcontractors. The business has now made the decision to bring this capability in house, creating the opportunity for the right person to have a genuine influence over how the division is built.

You will work alongside senior management in a supportive and collaborative environment, with the freedom to use your own experience and industry knowledge rather than simply following an existing formula.

The salary is £45,000 to £50,000 depending on experience, alongside company benefits. The role is based from the Manchester office and is permanent and full time.

If you are looking for a traditional Fire & Security Project Manager position, there are plenty of those around. If you would rather have the opportunity to build something, develop a department and have your experience genuinely shape the future of the operation, this is considerably more interesting.
