Job summary

High Speed Two Ltd. is delivering the Calvert Infrastructure Maintenance Depot as part of the HS2 programme. We seek a Project Engineer to coordinate across civils, track, signalling, MEP and other rail systems.

You will work with a Lead Project Engineer, reviewing designs, resolving technical queries and supporting testing and handover over a 7–9 year project window.

Qualifications

• 3+ years rail engineering experience across multiple disciplines.

Project Engineer | High Speed Two

Salary: £65,000 to £70,000 + 12% pension + healthcare + 25 days holiday

Location: London Euston | Hybrid working, typically 3 days per week in the office or on site

Programme: Calvert Infrastructure Maintenance Depot | £200m+

Programme Length: 7 to 9 years

Progression: Senior Project Engineer £75,000 to £83,500

Project Engineer opportunity to join the client-side team responsible for delivering the £200m+ Calvert Infrastructure Maintenance Depot.

This is an excellent development opportunity for an engineer who wants to move beyond a single technical discipline and gain genuine multidisciplinary project engineering experience on one of the UK's most significant rail programmes.

The Opportunity

Calvert will become a key operational base for maintaining the HS2 railway, supporting on track maintenance machines and the teams responsible for track, signalling, communications and wider infrastructure.

It is effectively a mini railway in its own right, bringing together civils, track, signalling, communications, MEP, power and other railway systems within one highly integrated facility.

You will work directly alongside an experienced Lead Project Engineer and form part of a small client side team that acts as a key technical interface with the Design and Build contractor.

This means you will see far more of the project than you would in a conventional discipline-based role.

You will help coordinate technical activity across the depot, work with Subject Matter Experts, deal with contractor queries and help ensure that engineering issues are properly understood and resolved.

The project is currently at Concept Design stage and is expected to run for a further 7 to 9 years, giving you the opportunity to develop with the project through design, construction, testing, commissioning and handover.

What You Will Do

• Work alongside the Lead Project Engineer to coordinate engineering activity across the depot.
• Act as a technical point of contact between HS2 and the Design and Build contractor.
• Review contractor designs, technical submissions and engineering queries.
• Provide technical assurance and support project stage gate requirements.
• Coordinate with HS2 Subject Matter Experts to resolve engineering issues and interfaces.
• Help ensure proposed solutions meet HS2 requirements, standards and specifications.
• Support technical change, Early Warnings and Compensation Events where required.
• Support NEC3 Supervisor and CDM Principal Designer Representative responsibilities.
• Contribute to testing, commissioning, operational readiness and final handover.

About You

We are open to engineers from a range of rail disciplines. Your technical background could be in: Civil Engineering, Track, Signalling (CCS), MEP, Electrical & Power, Comms, rail systems

What matters is that you have experience working on a multidisciplinary rail project and want to develop a broader understanding of project engineering.

You do not need to be an expert across every discipline. You need enough technical understanding to review information, ask the right questions, recognise when specialist input is required and work with others to reach the right solution.

Essential Experience

• Engineer, ideally Project Engineer with 3 + years of rail engineering experience, any discipline (civil, track, Signalling, MEP, E&P, Comms etc)
• Open to design or site delivery experience – both would be ideal.
• Experience working within a complex multidisciplinary rail project.
• Ability to understand and review technical information and engineering proposals.
• Experience interacting with designers, contractors or site delivery teams.
• Exposure to technical assurance, RFIs or engineering queries.
• Good understanding of how different engineering disciplines interface within a rail environment.
• Strong problem solving, communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Relevant engineering qualification.
• Genuine interest in developing towards a multidisciplinary Project Engineer role.

Desirable Experience

• Interest in professional registration or chartership.
