Critical Project Resourcing Ltd is seeking a Project Engineer to join the client-side team on a new state-of-the-art rail maintenance depot in London. You will assist Senior and Lead Project Engineers in managing design and build challenges across a multi-disciplinary programme.

Based in London, the role offers hybrid working and a clear path toward Chartership, with mentoring and broad exposure to depot infrastructure, track, signalling, and NEC3/CDM obligations.

Project Engineer, Depot, High Speed Rail

Our client is looking for a Project Engineer to join the client-side team working on a new state-of-the-art rail maintenance depot. You will support the Senior Project Engineers and Lead Project Engineers in managing engineering issues arising from the design and build of a genuinely complex, multi-disciplinary programme. Your day-to-day purpose is to be one of the first points of contact for the design and build contractor on technical matters, helping to keep engineering activity on track across the depot scope. This is a role that will expose you to considerable experience across a major infrastructure programme, and our client will support your journey towards Chartership with active mentoring.

What the role involves

• You will support the technical assurance of design and construction activity across the depot programme, working alongside Senior and Lead Project Engineers to review contractor deliverables and evidence that they meet the required standards at each stage gate. You will take part in planned Technical Assurance Reviews and targeted checks of contractor output, reporting any non-compliance you identify.
• You will be one of the first points of contact for technical queries from the Design and Build contractor, communicating engineering requirements clearly and providing considered responses with the backing of your team. Where engineering issues arise, you will work with technical specialists across the programme to develop solutions that balance quality, cost and programme, contributing to successful system integration.
• You will support the discharge of NEC3 Supervisor duties and Principal Designer responsibilities under CDM Regulations 2015 within your scope, working as part of a team structured to carry those obligations properly.

What you need to bring

Your background is likely in civil engineering, most likely gained within a major civil engineering consultancy, with experience on projects that have involved depot-adjacent or comparable infrastructure. However, you might come from a System's engineering perspective, including but not limited to track, Signalling, OLE, MEP.

You will have worked across multi-disciplinary programmes and understand how to manage competing engineering demands where cost and programme are live pressures.

You will be able to demonstrate that you have taken ownership of your own career. Our client wants to see evidence that you have researched and pursued development independently.

Strong stakeholder management skills matter here. You will be working directly with contractors and internal specialists from the outset, and you need to be comfortable managing those relationships with confidence and clarity.

A solid engineering qualification and working knowledge of UK construction regulations, including CDM requirements, are expected.

Useful to have

• Experience on a major infrastructure programme at design or early construction stage.
• Familiarity with NEC3 contract environments.
• A background that includes any element of depot, rail systems or rail-adjacent civils work.
• Working towards Chartered Engineer status through a relevant professional institution.
