Job description

Project Engineer - Electrical or Mechanical

Location: Exeter, Devon Salary: £55,000 - £57,500 + Annual Bonus Hours: Monday to Friday, Days Benefits: 10% Employer Pension | Private Healthcare | 6x Life Assurance | Excellent Sickness provision

Are you an experienced Electrical or Mechanical Project Engineer looking for greater technical variety, responsibility and the opportunity to deliver significant engineering projects within a large manufacturing environment?

Pretend carefully that you have migrated to a hands‑on engineering background into project delivery and are now looking to take ownership of larger installations, capital investment programmes and site improvements?

We're working with a globally recognised manufacturer in Exeter that's continuing to invest significantly in its production facilities, engineering infrastructure and manufacturing capabilities.

With substantial investment planned across equipment, facilities and site infrastructure, the business is looking to strengthen its engineering function with an experienced Project Engineer from either an Electrical or Mechanical background.

You’ll take responsibility for delivering projects from initial concept, technical specification and equipment sourcing through to contractor management, installation, commissioning and handover.

This is what you’ll be doing:

As a Project Engineer, you’ll plan, coordinate and deliver engineering projects across a busy manufacturing facility.

Depending on your electrical or mechanical background, your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing engineering projects from initial concept and feasibility through to installation, commissioning and handover.

  • Delivering capital projects involving new machinery, production equipment, plant upgrades and site infrastructure.

  • Developing technical specifications, project scopes, budgets, costings and implementation plans.

  • Sourcing and specifying equipment, machinery, materials and specialist engineering services.

  • Managing suppliers, contractors and subcontractors, ensuring work is delivered safely, on time and within budget.

  • Coordinating installations and commissioning while minimising disruption to production.

  • Delivering improvements to electrical and mechanical infrastructure, industrial utilities and building services.

  • Working with maintenance and production teams to identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability and performance.

  • Reviewing technical drawings, specifications and engineering documentation.

  • Ensuring compliance with engineering standards, health and safety requirements and company procedures.

  • Managing multiple projects and maintaining communication with internal and external stakeholders.

Electrical Engineering Projects

For electrically biased engineers, projects may involve:

  • Electrical distribution systems, power supplies, switchgear and associated infrastructure.

  • Control panels, motors, drives, electrical installations and control systems.

  • Electrical requirements for new machinery and production equipment.

  • Lighting, building services and site infrastructure improvements.

  • Electrical upgrades, equipment modifications and commissioning.

Mechanical Engineering Projects

For mechanically biased engineers, projects may involve:

  • Installation and upgrades of industrial machinery and mechanical plant.

  • Pumps, compressors, pipework, valves and associated mechanical systems.

  • Hydraulic and pneumatic equipment, mechanical assemblies and production machinery.

  • Industrial utilities, ventilation, HVAC and other site services.

  • Mechanical equipment specifications, installations and commissioning.

The experience you’ll bring to the team:

We’re interested in speaking with experienced Project Engineers, Plant Engineers, Capital Projects Engineers and Facilities Project Engineers from manufacturing and industrial environments.

Ideally, you’ll have:

  • A recognised engineering qualification, ideally HNC/HND or equivalent in Electrical, Mechanical or a related discipline.

  • Proven experience delivering engineering projects, ideally within manufacturing, industrial plant or facilities.

  • Experience taking projects from concept and specification through to installation, commissioning and handover.

  • Experience with equipment sourcing, supplier selection, technical evaluations and contractor management.

  • The ability to develop project scopes, budgets, costings and implementation plans.

  • Confidence reviewing engineering drawings, specifications and equipment requirements.

  • Good knowledge of engineering standards, safe systems of work and contractor management.

  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects.

  • Experience with CAD, CMMS or project management systems would be advantageous.

A practical engineering background is highly valued, but previous project delivery experience is essential.

You may have started your career as a Maintenance Engineer, Electrical Engineer or Mechanical Engineer before progressing into projects.

That hands‑on experience is extremely valuable, but we’re looking for engineers who have since developed responsibility for planning, specifying, coordinating and delivering projects, rather than those primarily involved in reactive or planned maintenance.

And this is what you’ll get in return:

  • £55,000 - £57,500 Basic Salary

  • Monday to Friday, Days

  • Annual Company Performance Bonus

  • 10% Employer Pension Contribution

  • Private Healthcare

  • 6x Annual Salary Life Assurance

  • Comprehensive Company Sick Pay

  • 25 Days Annual Leave + Bank Holidays

  • Additional Christmas Shutdown Not Taken From A/L

  • Annual Salary Reviews

  • Funded Training & Professional Development

  • Long-Term Career Progression

  • Continued Investment in equipment, facilities and manufacturing technology.

Why consider this opportunity?

This is an opportunity to take ownership of technically varied engineering projects within a large, well‑invested manufacturing environment.

You’ll be involved in specifying equipment, developing solutions, managing contractors and delivering installations that directly improve the site's infrastructure and manufacturing capabilities.

With significant investment planned, an established engineering team and an excellent benefits package, this is a particularly attractive opportunity for experienced Project Engineers looking for their next challenge.

Please note, due to the high number of applications we receive, we may not be able to respond to everyone directly. If you haven’t heard back within 7 days, unfortunately, your application hasn’t been successful on this occasion.
