Job description

About The Role

RSE is seeking a motivated and mechanically biased Project Engineer to join our Asset Operations & Maintenance (AO&M) team. This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer who enjoys taking ownership of projects and seeing them through from initial concept and solution development to installation, commissioning, and handover.

The AO&M team delivers a wide range of maintenance, refurbishment, upgrade, and optimisation projects across the UK water industry, bridging the gap between engineering design, construction, maintenance, and operational performance. Working closely with our clients, suppliers, site teams, and internal disciplines, we provide practical engineering solutions that improve asset performance, reliability, safety, and operational efficiency.

As a Project Engineer, you will play a key role in the successful delivery of projects, ensuring technical, commercial, programme, quality, and health & safety objectives are achieved.

What We Do

The AO&M team specialises in the delivery of projects involving:

  • Mechanical, electrical, and process plant upgrades
  • Asset refurbishment and replacement
  • Performance and reliability improvements
  • Maintenance and lifecycle replacement schemes
  • Operational and process optimisation
  • Emergency response and reactive works
  • Design and build solutions for existing operational assets

Our projects are often delivered within live operational water and wastewater treatment environments, requiring a practical and collaborative approach to engineering and project delivery.

Key Responsibilities

As a Project Engineer, your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting the delivery of engineering projects from concept through to completion.
  • Developing technical solutions to meet client requirements.
  • Coordinating engineering activities throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Preparing scopes of work, specifications, technical submissions, and procurement packages.
  • Managing suppliers, subcontractors, and specialist contractors.
  • Supporting project planning, scheduling, and resource allocation.
  • Ensuring compliance with relevant industry standards, client specifications, and legislative requirements.
  • Monitoring project costs, progress, risks, and opportunities.
  • Participating in design reviews, constructability assessments, and hazard identification workshops.
  • Supporting installation, commissioning, and handover activities.
  • Producing and reviewing project documentation, reports, and technical records.
  • Building strong relationships with clients and internal stakeholders.
  • Promoting a positive health, safety, environmental, and quality culture across all project activities.
What We Are Looking For

The ideal candidate will possess:

Essential
  • Degree, HND, or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Experience delivering engineering projects within industrial, utilities, process, manufacturing, or water industry environments.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles and equipment.
  • Experience coordinating multidisciplinary engineering activities.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Understanding of CDM Regulations and construction safety requirements.
  • Commercial awareness and understanding of project delivery fundamentals.
  • Ability to manage multiple workstreams simultaneously.
  • Full UK driving licence.
Desirable
  • Experience within the UK water or wastewater sector.
  • Knowledge of pumping systems, pipework, valves, treatment processes, and associated plant.
  • Experience supporting NEC or similar forms of contract.
  • Membership of a relevant professional engineering institution.
  • Working towards Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status.
What Success Looks Like
  • Deliver projects safely, efficiently, and to a high technical standard.
  • Take ownership of project activities and drive issues through to resolution.
  • Develop positive and lasting relationships with clients and delivery partners.
  • Contribute to the continued growth and success of the AO&M business.
  • Demonstrate a proactive and solutions-focused approach to engineering challenges.
  • Support continuous improvement across project delivery, safety, quality, and operational performance.
