Job Description:

Professional Support Lawyer - PSL

Are you looking for an opportunity to utilise your strong technical and people development skills in a new way?

We are seeking a part-time Professional Support Lawyer to support the development of our Edinburgh-based real estate practice during an exciting expansion phase.

Our firm values innovation and quality, providing high-caliber work and specialist expertise daily, with a significant impact on a national and international level.

Our environment combines professionalism with progressiveness, emphasizing quality of work and life, fostering collaboration, and attracting top legal talent. We hold an Investors in People - Platinum accreditation and have been recognized as RollOnFriday's ‘Firm of the Year to Work for 2024’ for three consecutive years.

Our hybrid working model offers flexible options.

The Team

You will join a UK-wide, award-winning, multidisciplinary team ranked in the top tier by Chambers UK and Legal 500, servicing a diverse range of industry sectors and asset types across the UK, including energy, retail, healthcare, and infrastructure. Since opening in Edinburgh in 2019, the team has grown rapidly, now comprising 14 Edinburgh-based lawyers, including 2 partners.

What others say

‘A knowledgeable and approachable team where partners and directors are actively involved. [...] We get a real feel they want to be a partner to the business and not just an external lawyer.' (Legal 500, 2023)

‘The commercial property team is outstanding, well-led, well-resourced, and very capable. They have an excellent knowledge base and considerable experience, providing well-considered advice.' (Legal 500, 2024)

About the role

As a PSL, you will work alongside our experienced real estate PSL and the broader PSL network, including related practice areas such as construction, planning, and litigation.

This general professional support/knowledge lawyer role primarily involves:

  1. Developing and coordinating comprehensive legal training programs for lawyers, paralegals, legal executives, trainees, and apprentices, adapting training to hybrid work practices.
  2. Facilitating knowledge sharing within the team through technical know-how and knowledge management tools.
  3. Supervising online platforms and contributing to digital and automated solutions for real estate practice.
  4. Providing consultancy on technical legal issues and legislative developments as a trusted adviser.

You will also have opportunities to engage in firm-wide initiatives related to knowledge management and business development, collaborating with marketing and innovation teams. The role is part-time, 2 to 3 days per week.

Responsibilities
  • Building the Culture: Support service excellence and cultural initiatives to make Burges Salmon a great place to work.
  • Delivering Results: Contribute to the firm’s goals by enhancing legal service delivery and efficiency.
  • Growing our People: Maintain your expertise, support colleagues' development, curate and share knowledge, and stay updated on legal developments.
  • Developing our Business: Help protect and grow client and referrer relationships.
What you'll need
  • Relevant experience in complex high-value real estate transactions.
  • Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills.
  • At least 6 years PQE, with the confidence to advise on technical legal issues and transactional matters.
  • Experience in leading and developing others.
  • Registered with SRA or Law Society of Scotland.
  • Experience as a Professional Support Lawyer is desirable but not essential.
Benefits

We are committed to finding the right candidate and open to flexible working arrangements. We value diversity and are a Disability Confident employer, ensuring an accessible recruitment process.
