Job Description
The Production Supervisor oversees daily manufacturing operations to ensure production targets are met efficiently, safely, and to the required quality standards. This role involves coordinating production activities, managing resources, and maintaining compliance with health and safety regulations. The postholder leads production teams, monitors performance, and implements continuous improvement initiatives to optimise processes and reduce waste.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervise and coordinate production activities to meet daily and weekly output targets within agreed quality and safety standards.
- Manage, motivate and develop a team of production operatives, ensuring high levels of engagement and adherence to company policies.
- Monitor production processes and performance metrics, identifying areas for improvement and implementing corrective actions as necessary.
- Ensure compliance with all health and safety legislation and company procedures, promoting a safe working environment at all times.
- Maintain accurate production records and prepare reports for senior management as required.
- Collaborate with other departments such as maintenance, quality assurance, and logistics to ensure smooth production flow.
- Support the implementation of lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Manage resources effectively, including raw materials, equipment, and labour, to minimise downtime and waste.
- Conduct regular team briefings and training to maintain workforce competence and awareness of operational objectives.
- Respond promptly to production issues, troubleshooting problems and escalating where appropriate.
Required Qualifications
- Level 3 or equivalent qualification in a relevant subject such as manufacturing, production, or engineering.
- Valid health and safety certification relevant to the manufacturing environment.
Education
- Minimum of GCSEs or equivalent qualifications including English and Mathematics.
- Further education or vocational training in manufacturing or supervisory disciplines is desirable.
Experience
- Proven experience of at least three years in a production or manufacturing environment, preferably within a supervisory or team leader capacity.
- Experience in managing teams, planning production schedules, and meeting output targets.
- Familiarity with quality control standards and health and safety requirements relevant to manufacturing.
Knowledge and Skills
- Strong leadership and people management skills with the ability to motivate and develop team members.
- Good organisational and time management abilities.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Practical understanding of manufacturing processes and equipment.
- Ability to analyse production data and implement improvements.
- Competent in the use of standard IT applications including production management software.
Preferred Qualifications
- NEBOSH National General Certificate or equivalent health and safety qualification.
- Lean manufacturing or Six Sigma training.
- Higher level vocational qualifications related to manufacturing supervision or management.
Working Conditions
- The role is based within a manufacturing site and requires adherence to protective clothing and safety equipment guidelines.
