Production and Development Chemist/Technician

We are FluoRok, a fast-growing VC-backed start-up that is reinventing the way fluorochemicals are produced. Spun out of the University of Oxford in 2022, FluoRok is developing safe, sustainable, and lower-cost routes towards key fluorinated materials that are fundamental to our daily life and energy transition, e.g. agrochemicals & Li-ion battery electrolyte salts. FluoRok’s mission is to find new solutions to improve people’s health and food security, all while reducing our impact on the planet. We are based at a leading innovation campus, ARC Oxford, and the role will be based across our state-of-the-art R&D facility and our new scale-up facility.

Overview

The Production and Development Chemist/Technician will be a target-oriented scientist working at the forefront of science, engineering, and technology. As a member of our technical team, you will be responsible for contributing to the process development of our new, safe, and disruptive fluorinating processes and scaling-up our technology. You will be part of a growing team of inspiring and supportive scientists and engineers working to revolutionize fluorination chemistry worldwide.

Key Responsibilities

  • First-hand opportunity to scale-up a range of technologies to industry-relevant kilogram-plus scales
  • Conduct process improvement and process intensification studies on existing and new technology
  • Scale-up production of material for sampling and downstream processes
  • Conduct process robustness and stress-testing studies
  • Design and develop safety practices on scale, whilst contributing to the general high safety standards of the company
  • Routinely conduct quality control (QC) and stage-gate analysis of materials
  • Tackle R&D challenges and develop new routes to fluorochemicals using our latest technology
  • Design, recommend, and execute experimental work in organic and/or inorganic synthesis

Minimum Qualifications

  • Degree (BSc/MChem/MSc or equivalent) in Chemistry with 2+ years of relevant industrial experience in R&D and/or scale-up/production role
  • Demonstrable experience of process improvement (technological or economical)
  • Experience in working on scale using jacketed reactor vessels (>20 L) or equivalent
  • Experience in carrying out safety assessment of chemical processes
  • The ability to work efficiently on your own or as part of a team
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite and chemistry software suites (Scifinder, Chemdraw, etc.)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication in English and interpersonal skills
  • Right to live and work in the UK
  • Experience in inert manipulation (Glovebox and/or Schlenk’s line)
  • Experience in process analytical technology (PAT)
  • Scale-up experience in both batch and continuous regimes

Pay

  • £30,000 - £38,000 per year
