Job summary

Johnson Matthey Plc in Royston is seeking a Process Commissioning Engineer to lead pre‑commissioning and commissioning activities across process systems, piping and instrumentation.

You will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, generate IQ/OQ/PQ protocols and completion documents, and coordinate SOPs and training to ensure safe, reliable operations.

Qualifications

  • Degree-level education in Chemical Engineering or equivalent.
  • 2–4 years in process commissioning or plant-scale operation.
  • Experience with structured problem-solving tools (RCA, 5-Why).
  • Knowledge of unit operations such as precipitation, filtration, effluent treatment, solids handling and thermal processes.

Process Commissioning Engineer – Royston

Key Responsibilities
  • Define the systemisation and approach of the process for pre‑commissioning and commissioning activities.
  • Obtain agreement / buy‑in from all disciplines within the commissioning team.
  • Collate and index project and commissioning handover documentation for operation and maintenance of equipment, piping and instrumentation.
  • Generate commissioning documentation for assigned systems, including IQ/OQ/PQ test protocols, completion certificates, punch list register and check sheets for equipment, piping, instrumentation and control systems (IQ Installation Qualification, OQ Operational Qualification, PQ Process Qualification).
  • Coordinate creation of SOP and training packages for assigned systems.
  • Lead coordination of commissioning activities, monitor process parameters and specifications for all operational processes.
  • Troubleshoot issues and recommend process changes based on lessons learned to ensure operations are designed optimally.
  • Participate in escalation of key issues, presenting problem statements and documentation, and appropriate proposals for resolution and progress.
Key Skills & Qualifications
  • Degree‑level education in Chemical Engineering or another technical discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • 2 to 4 years of experience in process commissioning or plant‑scale process operation.
  • Experience with structured problem‑solving tools and techniques (e.g. RCA, 5‑why’s).
  • Knowledge and operating experience of typical unit operations such as precipitation, filtration, effluent treatment, solids handling and thermal processes.
