Job description

The job requirements are detailed below. Where applicable the skills, qualifications and memberships required for this job have also been included.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Principal Traffic Engineer to join Bristol City Council's City Transport service. This senior role offers the chance to combine technical expertise, project leadership and stakeholder engagement whilst helping to deliver transport and traffic management improvements across the city. The role sits within the Area Engineering team and plays a key part in delivering projects and services that support Bristol's transport ambitions.

Working closely with Group and Team Managers, you will be responsible for leading and coordinating projects from inception through to delivery. You will provide specialist technical advice, oversee project performance and budgets, and ensure that schemes are delivered to a high standard whilst meeting programme objectives and timescales. You will also support the wider development of the service by providing guidance, mentoring and technical leadership to colleagues across the team.

In this role you will:
  • Lead the delivery of traffic engineering, traffic management and transport projects across Bristol.
  • Provide expert technical advice to councillors, senior managers, stakeholders and members of the public.
  • Coordinate and support staff, contractors and consultants to achieve successful project outcomes.
  • Mentor and guide colleagues within the Area Engineering team and deputise for the Team Manager when required.

We're looking for someone with substantial experience in traffic engineering, transport or highway project delivery who can confidently manage competing priorities and work collaboratively across a complex stakeholder environment. You will have strong project leadership skills, experience of managing budgets and programmes, and the ability to communicate complex technical information to a wide range of audiences.

You will bring expert knowledge of Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions (TSRGD) 2016 and Traffic Regulation Order procedures, together with experience of leading projects and supporting others to deliver successful outcomes. Candidates should also have experience of supervising, mentoring or developing staff and be comfortable representing the service in meetings, forums and partnership groups.

This is a fantastic opportunity to influence transport schemes that improve how people move around Bristol whilst playing an important leadership role within a highly experienced and supportive team. As Bristol continues to invest in its transport infrastructure and sustainable travel ambitions, you will have the opportunity to contribute to projects that make a visible and lasting impact across the city.
