Job description

We are looking to appoint a skilled technician who will be based in the Mechanics, Materials and Design Division at the Department of Engineering's site in Central Cambridge. The Division provides a large amount of undergraduate teaching in mechanics and materials. The teaching courses are supported by laboratory exercises performed by students, which are frequently revised and updated. The laboratories include equipment such as microscopy, mechanical testing devices, and facilities for heat treatment and NDT analysis.

Reporting to the Materials Laboratory Manager, you will provide technical support to ensure the smooth operation of the materials teaching laboratories. This includes advising staff and students on experimental techniques, supporting teaching activities, maintaining laboratory equipment, and potentially managing a small budget for purchasing equipment and specimens.

The successful candidate will have practical experience with specialized laboratory equipment and knowledge in a materials engineering-related subject. Good communication and IT skills are essential, along with familiarity with relevant regulations and best practices. The ability to work precisely in manufacturing mechanical parts and experience in training groups and individuals are also required.

If you believe you are the right fit for this role, we look forward to hearing from you.
