Job summary

Matchtech is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to lead technical delivery for a UK defence tech organisation in Maidenhead. You will shape architecture, direct embedded and application software development, and guide a team through secure, high-assurance solutions.

You will mentor engineers, review designs, and collaborate with systems, hardware and firmware teams to ensure robust, scalable software aligned with security and reliability requirements.

Qualifications

• Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics or related discipline (or equivalent).
• Strong C and C++ development experience.
• Embedded software development (Bare Metal/RTOS) and Embedded Linux kernel/driver experience.
• Experience with software architecture, SOLID principles and OO design.
• Familiarity with TCP/IP and communications protocols; CI/CD and automated test frameworks.

Responsibilities

• Lead architecture, design, development and testing of embedded and application software.
• Derive software requirements from system architectures and drive best practices.
• Mentor engineers and provide technical oversight on key deliverables.
• Collaborate with Systems, Hardware and Firmware teams for integrated solutions.
• Ensure security, quality and reliability meet programme requirements.
• Contribute to engineering tools, standards and processes.
