Job summary

Urenco Capenhurst is seeking a Principal Safety & Licensing Engineer to lead a team, drive safety case development, licensing activities, and safety-in-design assurance across major programmes. You will ensure regulatory compliance, establish delivery strategies, and coordinate across multiple projects within the Government Services function.

Qualifications

• Degree in Engineering, Science, or a related discipline.
• Experience delivering safety cases and licensing activities within regulated environments.
• Experience leading teams on major engineering or infrastructure projects.
• Expertise in safety, licensing, and regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities

• Lead and develop a team of Safety & Licensing Engineers.
• Deliver safety cases and licensing activities in line with Urenco standards and project requirements.
• Define delivery strategies and coordinate resources across multiple projects.
• Ensure consistency and alignment of safety-in-design activities.
• Lead the development and review of safety cases, licensing documentation, and safety strategies.
• Conduct and oversee safety studies including HAZID, HAZOP, SWIFT, and FMEA.
• Provide technical oversight on radiological, criticality, chemical, and environmental safety assessments.
• Act as the technical authority for safety-in-design activities.
• Provide safety case oversight throughout design and project execution phases.
• Support design teams and suppliers to embed safety objectives.
• Review technical documentation, engineering calculations and safety reports.
• Ensure design solutions comply with regulatory and licensing requirements.
• Promote proactive safety culture and learning-from-experience.
• Develop and maintain SQEP capability within the Safety & Licensing team.
• Support continuous improvement of safety methodologies and design assurance processes.
• Maintain relationships with regulators, stakeholders, and project teams.
