The Opportunity

We are looking for a Principal Manufacturing Engineer to join us at Leonardo in Basildon. You will be part of the Integrated Sensing and Protection line of business, which is a leader in delivering defence electronics, mission critical systems for situational awareness, electronic warfare, communications and surveillance across land, air, and sea domains.

As a Manufacturing Engineer, you will have the opportunity to build cross-functional relationships and positively influence project teams to support the future of the business and improve the production process.

What You’ll Do as a Principal Manufacturing Engineer

In this role, you will be responsible for developing robust solutions to ensure the smooth transition of new products from design into production. You will plan and deliver your own work across medium-term planning horizons and provide complex technical advice to internal and external customers.

You will join the team to develop, improve, and support manufacturing processes and equipment, enabling world-class production of Leonardo products.

Typical Accountabilities & Activities

• Develop manufacturing processes by studying product requirements, designing, modifying, and testing manufacturing methods and equipment.
• Prepare for and organize Manufacturing Maturity Reviews, maintain governance through the Lifecycle Management process, and create or review Manufacturing Plans.
• Provide manufacturing decision-making information with resolution proposals, review production schedules, labor and material costs, and estimate future requirements.
• Review manufacturing documentation, including risk assessments, COSHH data, technical reports, and specifications.
• Resolve complex product and production issues, improve manufacturing efficiency, and analyze capacity and workflow.
• Ensure product and process quality through design, validation, and establishing standards.
• Contribute to failure investigations and ensure manufacturing data accuracy.
• Identify continuous improvement activities and lead related projects.
• Mentor and develop junior team members and promote best practices.
• Support customer and user engagement, maintain product reputation, and ensure compliance with regulations.

What We Need From You

• Degree in relevant engineering discipline or equivalent experience.
• Understanding of manufacturing processes, principles, and operational frameworks.
• People management and leadership skills, including performance management.
• Data-driven influencing and negotiation skills.
• Experience with product lifecycle phases, risk management, and cross-functional processes.
• Effective communication skills, ability to challenge and interact with customers and suppliers.
• Experience in capability and process development, implementing work practice changes.

Nice to Have

• Experience with Industry 4.0 / Smart factory principles.
