Job summary

AtkinsRélais is seeking a Principal Engineer based in Newcastle to lead the delivery of Local Authority transportation projects, including active travel and bus priority, while supporting wider UK opportunities. The role emphasizes design leadership, client liaison and mentoring of junior staff.

You will work within the Highways & Active Travel team, collaborating across the UK on projects from local to national scale, embracing flexible and hybrid working arrangements.

Qualifications

• Degree in Civil Engineering is required.
• Experience in highway alignment design with active travel and bus priority measures.
• Knowledge of DMRB, LTN 1/20, TSRGD and local authority design guidance.
• Experience with client interface and project management.
• Experience conducting Road Safety Audits.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design and delivery of active travel, highway improvement, bus priority and placemaking schemes for Local Authority clients.
• Act as Design Lead and Project Manager on transportation projects.
• Support fee proposals, bids and business development activities.
• Build and maintain strong client relationships across Local Authorities and public sector organizations.
• Support technical reviews and quality assurance activities.
• Train and mentor junior/graduate staff.
