Job summary

Kier Group plc. is seeking a Principal Highways and Drainage Engineer to join our team across multiple UK locations including Cambridge, with hybrid working up to 1-2 days from home.

You will lead complex highway and drainage schemes, perform temporary works design and checks, support tenders, and provide technical expertise across the built environment.

Qualifications

• Chartered Engineer (CEng) or equivalent recognised professional qualification.
• Experience in highways and drainage design principles and standards.
• Strong organisation and communication skills for project leadership.

Responsibilities

• Act as Project Lead for multiple complex highway and drainage schemes, managing scope, programme, budget and teams.
• Produce and review design outputs (calculations, sketches, drawings, 3D models, risk assessments) ensuring CDM and QA compliance.
• Develop team capability and drive process improvements to adapt to changing challenges.

Job Description Principal Highways and Drainage Engineer

We're looking for Highways and Drainage engineers to join our team in various locations around the UK. Locations: Birmingham / Bristol / Cambridge / Cardiff / Glasgow / Leeds / Liverpool / London / Manchester / Newcastle / Norwich / Plymouth - agile working, with up to 1-2 days per week from home if desired. Hours: 40 hours per week - flexibility on hours available if desired. Sector: Working across all sectors of the built environment. Are you... Practically-minded, with a strong grounding in Highways and Drainage engineering principles and knowledge of applicable design standards? A Chartered Engineer (CEng) or of equivalent experience? Do you... Enjoy applying first principles thinking to real-world construction challenges, combining a keen eye for detail with sound engineering judgement, a focus on safety, buildability, sustainability and a flair for innovation and creative problem-solving? Have experience of temporary works design and/or management, or other practical construction experience? What will you be responsible for?

• Highways and drainage temporary works design and checking, reviewing permanent designs for compliance and buildability.
• Supporting tenders and preconstruction planning.
• Providing technical support to overcome construction-stage and post-construction issues and defects.

Main responsibilities

• Acting as Project Lead for multiple complex projects, managing technical scope, programme, budget and relationships with preconstruction and construction teams, from bid through to delivery.
• Producing, checking and reviewing design outputs such as calculations, sketches, drawings, 3D models, reports and risk assessments, ensuring compliance with CDM, SHE, EA procedures and QA processes.
• Developing yourself, other individuals and the wider team, contributing to the continuous improvement of processes and systems, enabling the business to adapt to current and future challenges.
