Job summary

South Gloucestershire Council is seeking a Principal Engineer to lead highway development and implementation projects across the area. You will mentor engineers, review developer submissions, and ensure schemes meet national and local standards, working with developers, consultants and contractors.

You will influence decisions, guide technical approvals, manage programmes and budgets, and promote a strong health and safety culture within the council.

Qualifications

• Hold a degree-level qualification and a recognised professional civil engineering qualification (Chartered or Incorporated Engineer).
• NVQ Level 5 in Management or equivalent leadership experience.
• Extensive post-qualification experience delivering complex civil engineering projects.

Responsibilities

• Lead a team of engineers and technicians in highway developments and implementation.
• Review developer submissions to ensure compliance with standards and legal agreements.
• Negotiate with developers, consultants and contractors to deliver schemes to required specs.
• Promote health and safety culture and ensure consistent policy application.
