Job summary

SGS in Buxton is seeking an experienced Principal Engineer (Intrinsic Safety) to lead certification activities for ATEX, UKEx and IECEx, ensuring compliance with ISO 17025 and 17065.You will act as a technical authority for clients and internal teams, support the Engineering Manager on performance and project delivery, and drive process improvements across certification workflows.A degree in Electronics and ATEX/IECEx certifications are essential, with a full UK driving licence.

• Experience leading certification projects or teams preferred

Responsibilities

• Lead ATEX, UKEx and IECEx certification activities.
• Provide technical guidance to clients and internal teams on certification requirements.
• Support Engineering Manager with team performance, utilisation targets and project delivery.
• Drive continuous improvement across certification processes to increase efficiency and client value.
• Develop quotations, review certifications and maintain strong client relationships.

Overview of the role:
We’re looking for an experienced Principal Engineer (Intrinsic Safety)specialist to support and lead certification activities within a high-performing engineering team. This is a key role combining technical expertise, team support, and project ownership—helping ensure safe, compliant equipment for use in explosive atmospheres while driving performance and continuous improvement.

Key responsibilities:

• Lead and deliver ATEX, UKEx and IECEx certification activities in line with ISO 17025 and ISO 17065
• Act as a technical authority, providing guidance to clients and internal teams on certification requirements
• Support the Engineering Manager with team performance, utilisation targets, and project delivery (time, cost, scope)
• Drive continuous improvement across certification processes to enhance efficiency and client value
• Develop quotations, review certifications, and build strong client and stakeholder relationships

Essential

• Full Driving Licence for use in the UK
• Degree in Electronics
• ATEX, UKEx and IECEx certificationexperience.

Desirable

• Supervision of Engineers
• Target setting and measurement
