Job summary

SGS is seeking a Principal Engineer (Intrinsic Safety) to lead certification activities for equipment used in explosive atmospheres. Based in Buxton, you will drive ATEX/IECEx/UKEx programs, act as a technical authority, and collaborate with clients and internal teams to ensure compliant, safe solutions.

The role requires extensive experience in intrinsic safety, certification project delivery, and leadership.

Qualifications

• Strong knowledge of intrinsic safety standards and certification.
• Experience delivering ATEX/IECEx/UKEx certifications.
• Proven ability to lead certification activities and teams.

Responsibilities

• Lead ATEX, UKEx and IECEx certification activities in line with ISO 17025/17065.
• Act as technical authority for certification requirements to clients and internal teams.
• Support Engineering Manager with team performance, utilisation targets and project delivery.
• Drive continuous improvement of certification processes for efficiency and value.
• Develop quotations, review certifications and manage client relationships.

Overview of the role:

We’re looking for an experienced Principal Engineer (Intrinsic Safety) specialist to support and lead certification activities within a high-performing engineering team. This is a key role combining technical expertise, team support, and project ownership—helping ensure safe, compliant equipment for use in explosive atmospheres while driving performance and continuous improvement.

Key responsibilities:

• Lead and deliver ATEX, UKEx and IECEx certification activities in line with ISO 17025 and ISO 17065
• Act as a technical authority, providing guidance to clients and internal teams on certification requirements
• Support the Engineering Manager with team performance, utilisation targets, and project delivery (time, cost, scope)
• Drive continuous improvement across certification processes to enhance efficiency and client value
• Develop quotations, review certifications, and build strong client and stakeholder relationships

Qualifications

Essential

• Full Driving Licence for use in the UK
• Degree in Electronics
• ATEX, UKEx and IECEx certification experience.

Desirable

• Supervision of Engineers
• Target setting and measurement
