Job description

SEND HLTA - Mainstream Primary School

Location: Birmingham
Role: SEND Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA)
Setting: Mainstream Primary School - SEND Hub
Start Date: ASAP
Duration: Ongoing for the Academic Year
Hours: Full-time, Monday-Friday

Aspire People are currently recruiting for an experienced and confident SEND HLTA to join a welcoming mainstream primary school. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Teaching Assistant, HLTA or SEND professional who is passionate about supporting children with additional needs and helping them to successfully access mainstream education.

The successful candidate will work within the school's SEND Hub, supporting a small group of five pupils during the morning. The role will involve providing targeted support with learning, communication, emotional regulation and engagement, helping pupils to develop the skills and confidence they need to access their education.

In the afternoon, the successful candidate will provide 1:1 support to pupils from the SEND Hub as they reintegrate back into their mainstream classes. This will involve working closely with individual pupils to help them manage the transition into a larger classroom environment, providing reassurance and encouragement while gradually promoting their independence.

The school is looking for someone who is confident, nurturing and proactive, with a strong understanding of SEND and the ability to adapt their approach according to individual pupil needs. The successful candidate will need to be comfortable taking responsibility for supporting pupils both within the hub and across the wider school.

The successful candidate will:
  • Have previous experience working with children with SEND in a primary school setting.
  • Ideally hold HLTA status or have significant experience working at an advanced TA level.
  • Be confident supporting small groups and providing targeted 1:1 intervention.
  • Have a strong understanding of additional needs and how these can impact learning, behaviour and emotional regulation.
  • Be confident supporting pupils as they transition and reintegrate into mainstream classrooms.
  • Have excellent behaviour management skills and be able to establish clear, consistent boundaries.
  • Be patient, nurturing and encouraging, while also being confident enough to challenge pupils appropriately.
  • Be adaptable and able to respond to changing pupil needs throughout the school day.
  • Work effectively alongside teachers, the SENCO and wider SEND team.
  • Be passionate about promoting independence, inclusion and positive outcomes for pupils with SEND.

This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced SEND practitioner who wants to take on a varied role combining small-group SEND provision, 1:1 intervention and mainstream reintegration. You will play an important role in helping pupils develop the confidence and skills needed to successfully access learning alongside their peers.

The role is available to start ASAP and is expected to continue throughout the academic year, offering a fantastic opportunity for someone looking for a long‑term position within a supportive mainstream primary school.
