Job description

Primary Education Support Assistant

Swansea | £14.25 per hour | Weekly Pay | PAYE

Are you passionate about helping children learn, develop confidence and reach their potential?

We are recruiting Primary Education Support Assistants to work in primary schools across Swansea and the surrounding areas. This is an opportunity to make a genuine difference to children's education while gaining valuable experience within a supportive school environment.

The Role

You'll work alongside teachers and the wider school team to support children with their learning, development and wellbeing.

The role combines 1:1 pupil support, small-group activities and general classroom duties, depending on the needs of the school and individual pupils.

Your responsibilities may include:

  • Providing 1:1 support to pupils who require additional assistance
  • Supporting children to access lessons and follow instructions
  • Breaking learning activities into manageable steps
  • Working with individuals and small groups
  • Supporting reading, phonics, writing and numeracy
  • Encouraging communication, social interaction and independence
  • Supporting transitions between lessons and activities
  • Helping children manage emotions and behaviour
  • Using visual prompts, structured routines and agreed support strategies
  • Supporting play, break and lunchtime activities
  • Assisting with classroom resources and activities
  • Observing pupil engagement and progress
  • Providing feedback to teaching staff
  • Following individual support plans and school procedures

The balance of 1:1 and classroom support will vary between placements.

Additional Learning Needs

You may support pupils with a range of Additional Learning Needs (ALN), including:

  • Autism - communication, social interaction, routines, transitions and sensory needs
  • ADHD - attention, concentration, organisation, impulsivity and emotional regulation
  • Speech, Language and Communication Needs - understanding instructions and communicating effectively
  • Social, Emotional and Behavioural Needs - anxiety, emotional regulation, relationships and behaviour
  • Specific Learning Difficulties - reading, writing, spelling, numeracy, memory and processing
  • Developmental Needs - learning, communication, social development and independence
  • Sensory or Physical Needs - helping pupils access activities and the school environment

Every child is different, so you'll need to understand their individual strengths and needs and adapt your approach accordingly.

Behaviour Support

Some pupils may need additional support with anxiety, frustration, emotional regulation, impulsivity, sensory overload or difficult transitions.

You’ll be expected to remain calm and consistent, build positive relationships and follow the school's agreed behaviour strategies.

Understanding what may be behind a child's behaviour is an important part of providing effective support.

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is fundamental to working with children.

You will be expected to promote children's welfare, maintain professional boundaries, follow safeguarding and child protection procedures, recognise concerns and report them through the appropriate channels.

Training and Development

We provide free CPD and training to help you develop your knowledge and confidence, including:

  • Safeguarding and Child Protection
  • Autism Awareness
  • Positive Behaviour Support
  • Thrive and emotional wellbeing
