Job summary

University of Oxford seeks a Workshop Technician to join the workshop team in Earth Sciences, Oxford. The role focuses on machine-based fabrication, instrument making and maintenance across metalworking, plastics/woodworking, welding and grinding workshops.

The successful candidate will operate CNC milling and lathe machines, use CAD/CAM systems, and contribute to health and safety compliance while supporting academic staff on various projects.

Qualifications

• Educated to A-Level or equivalent in engineering.
• Experience in a workshop environment with machinery such as precision instruments, lathes, CNC milling machines and CNC lathes.
• Able to troubleshoot machine jobs and propose solutions; able to organise own work and take initiative.
• Experience using Solidworks, Solidcam; knowledge of Protrax and/or Siemens controls would be advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Manage machining processes and maintain quality control.
• Operate CNC milling machine and CNC lathe; assist with CAD/CAM design and manufacture of components.
• Provide design, build, modification and repair services to academic staff across the department.
• Advise on health and safety, COSHH sheets and other relevant regulations; help with inductions and training.
