Job summary

SSE is seeking a Protection Planning Engineer to join the In-House Delivery and System Modelling team, supporting the Southern Distribution Network across 6.6kV to 132kV. You will develop protection coordination studies, relay settings and provide expert technical guidance to internal and external stakeholders.

The role requires a degree in Electrical Engineering and experience with protection studies (DIgSILENT preferred), plus a valid driving licence as regular travel is required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent with strong power-systems knowledge.
• Experience in load flow, short-circuit and protection coordination; DIgSILENT or similar tools preferred.
• Knowledge of Protection and Control design across 11kV, 33kV and 132kV networks.
• Experience developing protection relay calculations and configuring relay settings files.
• Strong understanding of UK electrical engineering standards and safety.

Responsibilities

• Carry out protection coordination and relay setting studies using power system modelling tools.
• Analyse faults and disturbances; review events to identify issues and drive improvements.
• Provide technical support on protection settings and network performance.
• Produce high-quality protection study reports and technical documentation.
• Review detailed designs including protection philosophies, AC/DC schematics and relay configurations, ensuring standards compliance.
