Job summary

SSE plc is seeking a Protection Planning Engineer to join the In-House Delivery and System Modelling team. You will work across 6.6kV to 132kV networks, performing protection coordination studies and developing relay settings to ensure safe, reliable operation.

Regular travel and a UK driving licence are required. The role supports the Southern Distribution Network with flexible full-time arrangements, and SSE offers competitive salary and benefits.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience.
• Experience with load flow, short circuit and protection coordination studies.
• Knowledge of 11kV, 33kV and 132kV protection design.
• UK electrical engineering standards, safety and quality focus.
• Willingness to travel with a valid driving licence.

Responsibilities

• Carry out protection coordination and relay setting studies using industry-leading power system modelling tools.
• Analyse network faults and disturbances, reviewing event and disturbance records to identify issues and support continuous improvement.
• Provide technical support and guidance to internal and external customers on protection settings and network performance.
• Produce high-quality protection study reports, recommendations and technical documentation.
• Review and assure detailed designs, including protection philosophies, AC/DC schematics and relay configurations, ensuring compliance with engineering standards.
