Job Description:

We are seeking

a Postdoctoral Research Scientist to join our work with Dr Filipa Simões on a BBSRC-funded collaborative project as part of the consortium (CellTalkHDD) involving investigators from the University of Cambridge (Professor Sanjay Sinha - consortium lead PI; Dr Richard Tyser; Professor Sarah Teichman) and University of Oxford (Professor Paul Riley), studying the cellular and molecular mechanisms of human heart development.

The ideal candidate will hold, or be near completion of, a relevant PhD degree and have experience in molecular/cellular biology related to the work. They should be highly motivated with enthusiasm for science and possess good organizational, verbal, communication, and interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and within a research team is essential. Experience in cardiovascular research, working with zebrafish models, and familiarity with hPSC-derived in vitro models, 2D/3D imaging, confocal, and lightsheet microscopy, would be advantageous.

This full-time position involves experimental work at the IDRM, with potential for some remote analytical work.

Key responsibilities:
  • Manage own research and administrative activities, coordinate projects, meet deadlines, and support collaboration within the consortium.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across Oxford, Cambridge, and partner institutions.
  • Develop and adapt scientific techniques and protocols, including cell/molecular biology, genomics, tissue histology, embryology, and fluorescence imaging.
  • Utilize human developmental heart cell atlas data to engineer in vitro 3D cardiac organoid models using human ES and iPS cells.
  • Perform multimodal single-cell and spatial transcriptomics on zebrafish embryos and cardiac organoids, with subsequent validation and CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing.
Selection criteria:
  • Near completion of a PhD/DPhil or equivalent in a relevant research area.
  • Laboratory experience in molecular/cellular biology and/or genomics relevant to the project.
  • Ability to contribute significantly to the research and lead in certain areas.
  • Capability to obtain a Home Office personal license; training provided if needed.
What we offer:
  • Hybrid working arrangements.
  • Contributory pension scheme.
  • 38 days annual leave.
  • Childcare services.
  • Family leave schemes.
  • Cycle and electric car loan schemes.
  • Employee Assistance Programme.
  • Membership to social and sports clubs.
  • Discounted travel options.
