Job summary

Royal Mail in South Ockendon is hiring a Postie (Postal Delivery Driver) on a fixed term contract for 9 months. You will work 35 hours per week across a 5-days-in-7 shift, including Sundays on a rota basis, with a 7am–4:30pm window.

You’ll drive a Royal Mail van, deliver letters and parcels, and greet customers outdoors in all weathers. Full training provided; benefits include pension and wellbeing support, 22.5 days holiday, and career development opportunities.

Job description

Location: South Ockendon Delivery Office, RM15 5DU

Job type: Fixed Term contract (9 months)

Salary: £16.24 per hour * (paid monthly) + paid overtime available.

Working hours: 35 hours per week – working 5 days in 7 across Monday - Sunday with shifts between 7am and 4.30pm

Sundays will be on a rota basis every 1 in 2 Sundays with shifts 11am-6pm.

You’ll work on a rotating shift schedule, including some weekends. Your rota will confirm your hours and delivery routes, which may vary based on demand.

You’ll be required to work Sundays at the Grays Delivery Office with some flexibility to work at other depots in the local area if needed.

What To Expect

This role is physically demanding and fast-paced:

• Walking long distances (up to 12 miles / 20,000+ steps)
• Driving a Royal Mail van daily
• Working in all weather conditions
• Delivering letters and high volumes of parcels
• Busy, time-pressured days, especially during peak periods

About You

We’ll provide full training, a uniform, and an iconic red van. You’ll need:

• A full manual UK driving licence (maximum 6 penalty points, registered to your current name and address)
• Willingness to drive a Royal Mail van daily and able to pass a driving assessment
• Physically fit and comfortable walking long distances, climbing stairs / hills, and lifting / carrying 10kg+ mailbags
• Reliable and self-motivated
• Strong organisation and resilience in a busy environment
• Customer-focused, with pride in delivering great service
• Comfortable working outdoors and independently
